Xecue means "love" in the language of the Kiliwa natives of the Guadalupe Valley and the name sets the tone of the winery perfectly. Jose Luis, co-owner with his wife Alberta, is a self-professed lover of growing grapes and his wife, of creating wine. Together they are a remarkable team setting out to create wines to be shared and enjoyed by friends and loved ones.
Jose Luis is an especially warm and hospitable host who loves to share his passion for growing grapes, making wine and collecting cacti and succulents. He will take you on a personal tour through the warehouse where the wine is made and through his cacti and succulent rock garden featuring plants from around the world, all the while offering stimulating conversation. Yigo, the ranch dog and on-site love bug, will come along to lean on you.
Wine tasting is available for their three wines: Xecue Cabernet Sauvignon, Xecue Merlot, and Relato, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, and Merlot.
Relato is particularly unique as "Relato" means "story" in Spanish and the bottle beautifully tells a story in different sized fonts that creatively decorate the bottle. Reading it is kind of like putting a puzzle together with all the little parts that when united create a complete picture. Unless you are fluent in Spanish you may not completely understand the story, but surely it is a story of love!
The Relato bottle says "To create this wine, people like you and I share stories that make the soul happy and the heart sweet." Each year, the Relato bottle will tell a new story with the new vintage. Be sure to take a bottle with you to share with family and friends as it is intended.
Xecue is in an exciting stage where dreams are being realized. They are currently developing the wine "cava" and recently completed a beautiful, large gazebo for events of up to 300 people. Grape vines will cover the gazebo roof creating a beautiful natural roof that, at times, will be decorated with fresh grapes.
After a visit to Xecue, it's easy to feel like friends or family of Jose Luis, and you will have happy stories to tell your own family and friends.
