Vena Cava

Vena Cava is an exceptional private winery owned and operated by Eileen and Phil Gregory, proprietors of the romantic Mediterranean style B&B luxury retreat La Villa del Valle. The concept of Vena Cava is to create the highest quality wines from the very best grapes in the valley.

Eileen shares the thought behind their wine, "Phil's idea is to make elegant, understated wines that whilst complex are easy to drink and complement rather than fight with food for center stage. His wines are very much an expression of who he is - European at the core but with vibrant, spicy, new world accents."

Vena Cava organic wines are just that - created in a new-world style that retains the elegance of old-world grapes. Calling their wine a representation of the life blood of the valley, Phil makes every effort to respect the land upon which he nurtures his vines. All grapes are grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers.

The Vena Cava Cabernet Sauvignon is aged for twelve months in American oak barrels. This is a more complex wine, with intense notes of anise, cassis and dark berries. It will make a fine companion for hearty stews, meats and medium cheeses.

Phil's blend of Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon is slightly acid and highly drinkable, with mature fruit aromas including blackberry and black currant. Aged for just under a year, this wine couples beautifully with cold meats, duck and shrimp.

Reserva is a well balanced ruby with smooth tannins and good body. It pairs well with swordfish and yellowfin tuna, dark chocolate and aged cheeses.

Finally the Tempranillo, with its vibrant cherry hue and just a hint of oak. This elegant wine goes well with quail, seafood and paella.

Vena Cava is currently constructing their winery building, which has been described as "sensational." The entire structure is subterranean and the roofs will be made out of upturned wooden boat hulls which will give a cathedral type effect. This year they planted another 5,000 grapes. The vineyard now is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Tempranillo, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Chardonnay, and Viognier.

Visitors from all over the world are welcomed warmly and will be greeted with friendly smiles and delicious wines at both La Villa del Valle and Vena Cava for a tour, a tasting, a meal or an overnight.
