In the mid-1990s brothers Abel, Bernardo and Roberto Lafarga purchased several hectares of land in Valle de Guadalupe's exquisite San Antonio de las Minas community and created a small family run winery, planting four distinctive grape varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Nebbiolo and Syrah. Their guiding vision was to develop unique, desirable wines which would express in both body and flavor the passion the Lafarga family felt for both the terrain of Baja California and its climate.
The grapes flourished, thanks to hot days tempered by ocean breezes and cool nights. As they ripened they developed an intense color and with the aroma of dark fruit. Viúedos Lafarga was born as a group of complex, flavorful red wine blends. From the red-violet Equinox-Nebbiolo with its hints of cassis and licorice to the garnet hued DQ-XVI, a special mixture of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Syrah, each wine is nuanced and one-of-a-kind. Of particular sentimental interest are the Esther and Don Jose 1905 wines, developed by the brothers in honor of the memory of their parents.
Viúedos Lafarga released its first label wine at the annual Valle de Guadalupe harvest festival, Fiesta de la Vendimia, in 2004. It was received with great appreciation and quickly earned the winery acceptance as one of the bright new lights of the acclaimed Ruta del Vino in Baja California.
Today the Lafarga brothers continue to expand their production using modern equipment, focusing on medium term wines produced without haste. Attention is paid to even the smallest details, from the manner of picking, crushing and fermenting grapes to maintaining the barrels, bottling the wine and transporting it to stores. They currently bring forth 1,000 cases of wine annually with an ultimate production goal of 5,000 cases. To accomplish this they pursue a strategy of developing their land carefully to optimize its natural resources while creating local jobs. A wine-making and tasting facility is in the process of being constructed in order to give consumers and connoisseurs greater access to these wonderful wines... and their first white varietal, a Chardonnay, is also in the works.
Viúedos Lafarga currently offers its outstanding wines for purchase through Cava de Esquina in Ensenada and also at La Contra.
