About Us

Our Story

Our mission is to make buying Mexican insurance easy and fun so
you can experience Mexico the way we have since we were kids. Here's a little timeline of how we started and highlights we've had along the way!

1994

Lifelong Mexico traveler/surfer John "Doc" Morton opens the first Baja Bound Insurance office drive-through location near the San Diego border.

1999

With his eye on the future, BajaBound.com founder Hank Morton (Doc’s son) brought the business to the web because drive throughs are for burgers, not insurance! Hank wanted to make buying Mexican insurance easy, and created the industry's first website to buy and print your policy on-line in a matter of minutes.

2003

Putting sibling rivalry aside, Geoff and Jen Hill join the Baja Bound team and help Hank open the first office in downtown San Diego. Geoff focuses on business development while Jen focuses on customer service and office operations.

2003

Baja Bound begins working directly with Mexican insurance underwriters HDI Seguros (formerly GE Seguros) in 2003 and Chubb Seguros (formerly ACE Seguros) in 2005.

2004

Baja Bound begins growing the brand by sponsoring events like the Rosarito Ensenada Bike Ride, Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race and charity golf tournaments on both sides of the border.

2004

Baja Bound partners with a number of non-profit organizations who organize house building and community development projects in Mexico.

2005

Fletch joins the Baja Bound team as the official staff dog/trash can raider. He later stars in the first ever Baja Bound commercial “Fletch Goes To Mexico."

2014

Baja Bound launches the first mobile friendly version of the website featuring responsive design, allowing clients to easily buy Mexican insurance with their smartphones or tablets.

2015

Baja Bound partners with the Baja Norte tourism board and sponsors several maps to promote travel to the region.

2016

The Baja Bound Racing Team wins back to back Class 30 championships in the SCORE International Off-Road Racing Series in 2016-2017.

2019

Baja Bound reaches a 25 year milestone as a Mexican insurance agency, celebrating a journey from humble beginnings in 1994 to an industry leader in 2019.

2021

With Covid causing many events in Mexico to be cancelled, Baja Bound signs on as a sponsor of the San Diego Loyal professional soccer team to promote the business to fans in the region.

2021

The Baja Bound Racing Team has an amazing season and captures two wins at the legendary SCORE Baja 1000, clinching the Class 30 and Class 40 pro moto championships!

2022

Baja Bound signs on as a sponsor of the popular KPBS Baja adventure travel show "Crossing South" featuring host Jorge Meraz.

Baja Bound president and founder Hank Morton has had a passion for Mexico starting at a very early age. He grew up doing surf/camping trips in Baja and traveling further south to visit family friends in mainland Mexico. During college, he spent a year abroad in Chile and continued to develop a love for Latin America. He programmed and designed the first version of the Bajabound.com website in 1999, and was the lead developer for Baja Bound for many years alongside his role as president. Since the very beginning, he has always been working to make insurance buying easier, and to keep Baja Bound on the leading edge of business and technology. Hank is fanatical about cycling (if it's got two wheels and pedals, he's interested), and spending time with his family.

Angela joined Baja Bound in 2023, soon after moving to San Diego to be near the Mexican border and all it offers. She studied at the University of South Florida and has bachelor’s degrees in public relations and Spanish. The latter took her to Spain to study for a summer, fueling her passion for the Spanish language before she turned her sights to the history and culture of Mexico. Since then, she’s explored Mexico City, Tijuana, and Rosarito Beach and plans to continue to make great use of Mexico’s proximity to sunny San Diego. When she’s not helping folks secure insurance for their travels south of the border, you’ll find her at the beach or dining at hole-in-the-wall restaurants where calling the food “spicy” is an understatement.

Scott Hillton

Scott Mercado

Director of Technology

Scott has been making websites since the 90s - The 1890s. With electric street lights installed just 11 years prior in Cleveland, Ohio, Scott invented a rudimentary computer with simple networking capabilities. While not a marvel of graphics or animation, seeing the words "Hello World" on a short-lived tube screen was truly electric. While famous for other inventions (like bi-directional stairs and toothless combs), Scott has since moved on to modernizing the entire sling-shot industry. One of his flagship sling-shots was recently used to put a Tesla into space. He lives in small box in eastern Florida with his wife Galadriel, a royal Elf of both the Noldor and the Teleri.

Fletcher Hill

Fletcher Hill

Fletch joined Bajabound.com in Spring 2005. He brings his vast knowledge of rawhide chewing and trash can raiding to the team, as well as insatiable enthusiasm that could only come from a Weimaraner.
