It dawned on me at the last minute that I might need Mexican insurance when I drove my car in...co so I researched it and it turns out that yes, you need liability insurance from a Mexican insurance agency to drive your own vehicle in Mexico. The online process was easy. It just took a few minutes and cost about 40 bucks for 4 days. You can purchase by the day, month, 6 months, etc. I'll use them again if I need to.
