The Old Missions of Baja & Alta California 1997-1834 is the first book to present the founding of all 48 California missions, in order, and without discrimination based on modern borders. Beginning in 1697, the Jesuits first, then followed by the Franciscans and Dominicans, established missions in New Spain on what was believed to be an island, called California.
In this book each mission is clearly identified by its numbered position based on the founding date. Location maps using the mission's number clearly show that the missions were not all founded from south to north, in a chain, as many have believed since school days. Despite what most California mission books say, San Diego de Alcalá was mission #19, and the second one founded by Franciscan Padre Junípero Serra. 72 years of mission history was going on in the peninsula of California (today's Baja California) before San Diego was founded.
With over 160 photographs from the past and present, maps, and more, this 140 page book can be used for research or as a guide to the missions in both Baja California, Mexico and California, USA. History buffs and travelers alike will find The Old Missions of Baja & Alta California very user-friendly. The spiral bound book stays open on a particular mission page. The book fits easily into a glove-box, or backpack too. Directions to the Baja California missions are provided as the locations of ruins are not always well known.
The history of the Spanish conquest of the Americas is described, and what caused them to come to (Baja) California. The three Catholic Orders who founded the missions are described and is the mode of life at a missions. Finally, the effect of Mexican independence and secularization on the missions ending operation.
