Long-time Baja Bound Bulletin contributor Greg Niemann, who has written over 100 articles for his Baja Fever column on Baja Bound's website, has just released a new book.

Beyond Baja Legends: From Beautiful Baja to Mainland Mexico, (Sunbelt Publications, Chula Vista, 2025) is a broad collection of stories covering adventures, places, people, and historical events throughout Baja California, and beyond.

Niemann is a life-long Baja buff who has traveled and camped all over the Baja California peninsula and owned a vacation home there for over fifty years. He has also expanded his experiences in Mexico by having visited most of that country’s 31 states as well as the Federal District.

While promoting his first book, the memoir Baja Fever (Mountain N’ Air Books, La Crescenta, 1999), Niemann began looking into the history and lore of his favorite vacation and fishing spots, which led to more questions than answers. The result was researching and then writing Baja Legends: The Historic Characters, Events, and Locations That Put Baja California on the Map, (Sunbelt Publications, San Diego, 2002).

Since then he published three other non-Baja related books but continued to write numerous articles about Baja California for Baja Bound and other publications. He was often asked about another Baja book.

The result is this new book, Beyond Baja Legends: From Beautiful Baja to Mainland Mexico. It is a series of stand-alone articles written and compiled over several decades that cover the length and breadth of both Baja California states.

Included also are a few stories from the Mexican mainland, from surviving a terrifying hurricane in Mazatlán to lazing in Yucatan haciendas converted from old sisal plantations.

Discover what Wyatt Earp, John Steinbeck, Erle Stanley Gardner, Steve McQueen, and other notable figures had to do with Baja California. It’s all there, including a section on Mexican culture, holidays and events. Expats, tourists, and those with an interest in the land “down south” will be fascinated by the scope of information in Beyond Baja Legends. Enjoy reading some classic Baja California stories and you too will discover a lot of “I didn’t know that” moments.

Beyond Baja Legends is now available and you can order through the publisher Sunbelt Publications, Amazon, or ask for it at your favorite retailer.
