NORRA Mexican 1000

The NORRA Mexican 1000 is back again for another round of racing and fun! After a very successful event in 2010, the three day stage rally will wind down the Baja peninsula from May 5th to May 7th. Just like last year, stage one will run from Mexicali to Bahia de los Angeles; stage two will run from Bahia de los Angeles to Loreto and stage three will run from Loreto to La Paz.

Two main groups of vehicles will be participating in the event - vintage and alternative fuel. The vintage vehicles must be from before 1989 and will be further separated out by "technology breakpoints" to keep the competition fair. The alternative fuel group is an open class, so any vehicle can participate so long as they are running fuel other than a traditional racing fuel or pump gas.

NORRA History

NORRA (National Off-Road Racing Association) was founded in 1966 by a group of California racing enthusiasts led by Ed Perlman and Don Francisco and is known as being the first organization to put together off-road races in Baja. In 1967, Don helped establish and organize the first running of the Mexican 1000, and mapped the course and pit stops by airplane. Both Don and Ed worked together to define the classes and the first set of rules for off-road racing. The first Mexican 1000 off road rally went from Tijuana to La Paz with four classes of vehicles and a total of 68 cars. Visit the NORRA website for more information!
