Bruma Wine Garden: Campestre Evolves

Bruma Wine Garden has long been one of my favorite 'campestre' experiences in the Valle de Guadalupe. A bit less pretentious than its sibling Fauna (though I do love Fauna), outside, nestled under the olive trees in the rustic elegance that has become signature Valle.

So, imagine my surprise when I showed up with visiting family in tow and found out the shocking truth—Bruma Wine Garden was no longer there!

As you know if you've been to any of the experiences at Bruma, you must first check in at the gate. Our driver told the guard where we were going and he pointed off in the direction where the driver should drop us off. "But that's not the way to Bruma Wine Garden," I said. Instead, it was in the direction of the construction I had seen each time I had been to Bruma over the past few years, wondering what the new area might be.

That fall day I found out. Not only was the place I had been no longer there, but it had been replaced by something completely different, but equally compelling: Mercado Bruma. This new iteration, Bruma Wine Garden within the larger Mercado Bruma, is another example of the Valle’s constant evolution, offering a fresh, new, exciting experience for those of us who love to explore the ever changing Valle de Guadalupe.

A Trio of Visionaries

At the heart of this new experience is a trio, each bringing their unique flavor to the project. Maribel Aldaco has been named Latin America’s Best Pastry Chef in both 2023 and 2024. Her creations? They’re not just pastries; they’re edible perfection. David Castro Hussong has been repeatedly honored by the prestigious World’s 50 Best Restaurants, consistently at the forefront of the gastronomic world. And finally, rounding out this team is Lulu Martinez, Bruma’s passionate winemaker. Her elegant, French-inspired wines, each tell a story of the Valle's unique terroir and her unique touch. Together, these three visionaries have woven together flavors, design, and experiences that define the very essence of the new Mercado Bruma.

Mercado Bruma: An Open-Air Oasis

Stepping into Mercado Bruma feels like uncovering a secret. The design is an open-market concept, where thoughtfully laid-out spaces draw you in to explore. This isn’t just a spot for a meal or a wine tasting; it’s a place to linger, where food, artisanal products, and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere seamlessly converge. The Bruma Wine Garden thoughtfully caters to every appetite, from early risers eager for a fresh start to those seeking a leisurely evening under the stars.

If you're an early bird ready to seize the day, the Bruma Bakery is an absolute must-visit. Open from 7 AM to 5 PM on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays (it’s walk-ins only, so no need to worry about reservations), it’s the ideal spot to begin your day. Arrive early to snag a good spot and savor a rich coffee from Bruma Bakery alongside a freshly baked croissant.

If you’d like something a bit more than the bakery, the Bruma Wine Garden delivers a full dining experience throughout the day. Breakfast is served daily from 8AM to 11AM, offering a range of delicious options. We tried a variety and shared - the corn pancakes with strawberries and vanilla ice cream were a big heat for the sweet eaters. The chilaquiles and the avocado toast tempted those in our group who had a more savory bent. Those with a more ambitious pallet also tried the sea urchin croissant and the donut with ikura and fennel. Every dish is prepared with incredible care, truly capturing the essence of the Valle.

After indulging, take a relaxed stroll through the garden corridors. The beauty will draw you in. The indoor/outdoor aspect of the mercado gives the feeling of being surrounded by nature, even while inside. Outside wander amongst the olive trees, lavender, and sage, winding through the garden paths.

As the day unfolds, the Wine Garden transitions into lunch and dinner service, available from 12PM to 8PM. The menu, as you would expect, showcases the diverse flavors of the Guadalupe Valley. If you are looking for a more relaxed meal the Wine Garden is the place for you. Among the most popular choices are the mouth-watering wood-fired pizzas, a refreshing lettuce salad with sheep cheese, and comforting eggs with brioche bread and bacon.

An Evolving Gem

The Bruma Wine Garden, in its new form within Mercado Bruma, is so much more than just a place to eat and drink; it's an immersive experience that truly embodies the spirit of the Valle de Guadalupe. Though it was not what we expected, it far exceeded what we could have imagined. Had I known, I would have planned more time for us to simply linger and enjoy this space where culinary excellence, artisanal passion, and a respect for design beautifully converge. For those who love to experience the Valle, to explore its hidden gems, and to embark on unforgettable adventures, Bruma Wine Garden is a must-visit.

So, when you're planning your next adventure to the Valle de Guadalupe, make sure to carve out some time for Mercado Bruma and the new Bruma Wine Garden. Whether it’s for a morning pastry that delights, a leisurely lunch, an evening filled with fine wine, or simply to soak in the incredible atmosphere, you’re guaranteed an experience that will stay with you long after you’ve left.
