Many people are surprised to learn that their U.S. or Canadian auto insurance does not cover them when driving in Mexico. Although true, some U.S. insurance companies may offer a limited extension of vehicle theft and damages coverage up to a specific number of miles. It's important to have at least a Mexican liability policy to prove your financial responsibility. The only other way to prove financial responsibility is with large sums of cash.
Just as U.S. authorities will not accept a Mexican auto insurance policy for an accident, Mexican authorities will not accept a U.S. or Canadian policy either. Mexican law will not recognize U.S. or Canadian auto insurance policies.
This can vary company to company, but in general limited coverage may mean:
Generally no. Some U.S. companies say they do offer liability, but this can be misleading since it will not be recognized by Mexican authorities. The U.S. insurance company may also have certain conditions to be met first, for example, that the accident involved another U.S. citizen and/or your Mexican insurance liability limit has been exhausted.
The 21st Century website states:
Your policy contract does not provide any coverage for losses that occur in Mexico. If you would like temporary Mexico coverage, you must purchase the Mexico Coverage Endorsement.
Please note: **MEXICAN AUTHORITIES WILL NOT RECOGNIZE THIS COVERAGE EXTENSION AND MEXICAN LIABILITY INSURANCE MUST ALSO BE PURCHASED FROM A LICENSED MEXICAN INSURANCE COMPANY.**
Exception - Texas: The Texas policy contract automatically provides coverage for losses that occur in Mexico, using the same guidelines as the existing Mexico Coverage Endorsement as outlined below.

Only place to get insurance 👍

This is the fourth time we’ve worked with Baja Bound Agent- Michel Lopez when traveling...om California to Mexico. The customer service is always top-notch. Last time we were in Mexico in 2024, we got involved in a minor accident right by the border in Tecate. The local insurance sent an agent, but he was delayed by four hours. The sun had set, we had two kids in the car, and we were in an area that didn’t feel safe. Michel stayed on the phone with us the entire time, coordinating between us and the Mexican insurance representative. She went above and beyond and ultimately arranged for us to leave the site without waiting for the delayed agent. That decision quite literally saved us. I can’t be grateful enough, and it’s absolutely time to mention her in a review. Five stars couldn’t be better. Thank you, Michel.

One of the best Insurance experiences I've had. One, the prices are very very fair, especially...sidering how high the risk is you're taking when bringing your vehicle over the border. We were in Sonora for work, and one of our passengers had taken the keys saying they were just doing some work from the car. They decided, on their own and without permission, to drive the SUV up the hill for "better service". But being a novice to Mexico, this person was paying little attention to the road ahead, complacent because they were on a road adjacent to the highway. And while dazing off at the dunes, they didn't see the wire secure across part of the road, ultimately rolled the vehicle and totaled it. After just a couple of weeks working with the agents and the local authorities, we received the FULL insured claim for the incident. We never felt anything but helped. There was no crazy interrogation meant to catch you off-guard and make you feel small which we've experienced with other agencies. We had a Baja Bound representative reach out to us personally and make sure we are being helped properly at all times. She never made us wait too long for a response. We live full time in Baja and wouldn't choose any other business to cover all of our vehicles - from cars to motorcycles and I hear they are covering homes soon - ever. Thanks Geoff for having our backs!
