Many people are surprised to learn that their U.S. or Canadian auto insurance does not cover them when driving in Mexico. Although true, some U.S. insurance companies may offer a limited extension of vehicle theft and damages coverage up to a specific number of miles. It's important to have at least a Mexican liability policy to prove your financial responsibility. The only other way to prove financial responsibility is with large sums of cash.
Just as U.S. authorities will not accept a Mexican auto insurance policy for an accident, Mexican authorities will not accept a U.S. or Canadian policy either. Mexican law will not recognize U.S. or Canadian auto insurance policies.
This can vary company to company, but in general limited coverage may mean:
Generally no. Some U.S. companies say they do offer liability, but this can be misleading since it will not be recognized by Mexican authorities. The U.S. insurance company may also have certain conditions to be met first, for example, that the accident involved another U.S. citizen and/or your Mexican insurance liability limit has been exhausted.
The 21st Century website states:
Your policy contract does not provide any coverage for losses that occur in Mexico. If you would like temporary Mexico coverage, you must purchase the Mexico Coverage Endorsement.
Please note: **MEXICAN AUTHORITIES WILL NOT RECOGNIZE THIS COVERAGE EXTENSION AND MEXICAN LIABILITY INSURANCE MUST ALSO BE PURCHASED FROM A LICENSED MEXICAN INSURANCE COMPANY.**
Exception - Texas: The Texas policy contract automatically provides coverage for losses that occur in Mexico, using the same guidelines as the existing Mexico Coverage Endorsement as outlined below.

Baja Bound was recommended to us by a fellow SCORE racer for the Baja 400 in Ensenada. We insured... 12 vehicles with multiple drivers and BB was able to handle it effortlessly. Shout out to Michelle for her patience and follow up. We will use Baja Bound again when we return to race.

Recommended by others who have visited Mexico from the US. They were easy to use, clear in...cations and overall a good value. Thankfully we did not need to use our insurance on this trip but nice to know we had it.

I cannot speak highly enough about Baja Bound Mexican car insurance. They were there for me 1000%...when I needed it. I have had Mexican car insurance through Baja Bound for many years but never had a claim. In March of this year, we were in an accident in Mexico that totalled our perfect 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. The other party was at fault, (and admitted they were). The police report also stated this. We had insurance with a Mexican company (initials begin with H and end with I), and so did the party at fault. We both filed claims. We both talked to the insurance company’s investigator who contacted us. This investigator told us it was a simple case of the other party turning in front of us without the right of way and that we should receive our payout soon. Two months later, we were told by the insurance company that "the accident didn't happen" as reported, and that the claim wasn't going forward. That was all the info we could get. Having never made a major insurance claim before, I did not know that good insurance agents should and will advocate for their clients in case of an accident. I reached out to Baja Bound in desperation, and I am so grateful I did. After reviewing the details of the accident, Hank and Yara of Baja Bound understood that a mistake was being made. These two spent countless hours over the course of several months meeting with me and with the insurance company. They got details of why this company was claiming the accident “didn’t happen” as reported. This enabled me and the party at fault (now working together) to gather our own evidence to refute the absurd and outrageous claims of the insurance company. Unlike the agent for the party at fault, who did NOTHING to help his client get her claim paid, Hank and Yara took the evidence we gathered all the way up the chain of command to the very top of the insurance corporation, until they finally agreed to pay the claim. There were several times when I was ready to give up. Hank and Yara literally begged me to allow them to keep fighting for us! I am so glad I put my trust in them. Together we got the job done. If not for them, we would have been out more than 50,000 dollars and/or have been forced to engage in a lengthy and costly legal battle. Baja Bound is the real deal!
