Before James Holloway was born in 1987, his family was already in motion. His parents and older sister, Katie, decided to close a chapter in Alaska and begin again in Stockton, California. It was there, in the quiet Central Valley, that James grew up far from the ocean… but not far from its call.

Family vacations to coastal destinations like Santa Cruz and Pismo Beach planted something that would soon turn into an obsession. Surfing captured him at a young age. He started like any other California teenager: wanting to spend as much time in the water as possible. But for James, simply surfing wasn’t enough. He wanted to understand the board - to mentally take it apart and discover how it was made.

My first visit to Baja was with my sister, Alisabeth in the 80s. We came down from California in her old VW van. I white-knuckled it for a while, peeking through the dirty windshield. We traveled a narrow, two-lane road running through Rosarito Beach. As we traveled south of Ensenada, the road wound out to the coast where we watched the ocean water leap into the sky through a rocky blow-hole known as La Bufadora. Our passion for a true journey into the heart of Baja California began then. The Baja Bug bit me on this first trip, leading to an adventure to Land's End - Cabo San Lucas!

Hank Morton joined Baja Bound shortly after he graduated from college in the mid-90s. Between jobs, his goal was to teach himself coding while taking his father's small brick-and-mortar Mexico auto insurance business online.
