Playas de Tijuana, or just "Playas" as it is known by locals, begins at the border and extends several miles south into Mexico. Just minutes from the U.S. by car, this beach community is ideal for those who want to enjoy the best of both worlds or those who cross the border frequently. Playas is predominantly middle class, family oriented and features miles of sandy beaches, quiet parks, restaurants and cafes.
Playas de Tijuana offers all the conveniences of a small city - close to medical facilities, schools, churches and shopping. It is located before the first toll booth, so no toll is required to get to Playas, and it is a convenient starting point for trips down the toll road. Playas has a laid back pace all its own due to its relative geographic isolation from the rest of Tijuana. There is only one way in and out of Playas until the new exit to the south is complete.
Water lovers enjoy walking along the beach, surfing and body boarding. It is common to see dolphins, whales, huge pelicans and other marine life from the beach and ocean view homes in Playas. Real del Mar golf course is just 5 minutes from Playas down the toll road.
In recent years, new developments have begun to pop up in Playas like they have along the rest of the Gold Coast. The new developments feature high rise condos and single family homes. Along with the surge in housing developments has come a surge in commercial developments like a movie theater and a shopping center. New restaurants have moved in including Carl's Jr and Starbucks. Many Playas developments attract the attention of retiring U.S. citizens due to the proximity to the border and those who cross into the U.S. to work. Developments in Playas range from beach front condos and homes to developments with spectacular panoramic ocean views.
