Area Information - Ensenada
The port town of Ensenada, known as the "Cinderella of the Pacific" is located roughly one hour south
of the international border. Ensenada is the tail end of Baja's scenic Gold Coast that begins at the border.
It is a much larger city than Rosarito, however it offers charming sideway cafés, art galleries, shopping, a
bayside boardwalk, beaches, and a variety of restaurants.
Ensenada is well developed commercially and has many options including international franchises like
Home Depot, Applebee's, McDonald's, Burger King, Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Costco, Smart & Final, Auto Zone, and
Blockbuster. National franchises include Gigante, La Ley, Comercial Mexicana and Calimax. Cinépolis and Cinema Star movie
theaters are also located in Ensenada.
Just northeast of downtown Ensenada is the Baja wine country, Guadalupe Valley, that produces the majority of
Mexican wines. It is described as being how Napa looked 20 years ago. Various boutique and larger
wineries offer tours and wine tasting. The valley also produces olive oil, citrus fruit, jams, and Russian bread.
A short drive south of Ensenada is the second largest natural blowhole in North America aptly called La
Bufadora. The blowhole is a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike, who come to watch huge plumes
of water blast 70 feet into the air. Ensenada is a popular spot for snorkeling, kayaking, and diving.
Ensenada has two golf courses, Bajamar to the north and the Baja Country Club to the south. Bajamar's golf course
will be expanding another 18 holes. Greg Norman and Bay View Grand will be designing the course and a new residential
development by La Punta will be constructed.
