Area Information - Calafia
Calafia is a charming neighborhood just south of downtown Rosarito. Secluded coves, sandy beaches, and fascinating rock formations
make for an enchanting coastline. The name Calafia comes an exotic novel, "The Adventures of Esplandian" written by Garci Rodriguez de Montalvo.
In his novel he describes Queen Calafia, who was an Amazon warrior and a main character. The work, written in 1587, was popular during the
time of the Spanish exploration. The name California is believed to have been derived from the name Calafia.
The charming Hotel Calafia draws tourists from around the world. It is known for its Puerto Nuevo style lobster, charming mission facades and grounds,
and stunning ocean views. The famous landmark hotel sits on the previous division between Old and New California as it was recognized
during the mission era. History buffs will appreciate the artifacts and photos the hotel displays.
Being that Calafia is close to downtown Rosarito, it is convenient for residents to shop, dine, and visit local attractions. Downtown Rosarito
offers large stores and modern conveniences and brand new movie theaters. Just south of downtown Rosarito is an area called Popotla that features store after store
of Mexican handmade wares and wood carved furniture. Also nearby are Xploration, with movie-oriented interactive games, and Baja Studios where Titanic and Master and Commander were
filmed. Baja Studios is also where Narnia 3, Voyage of the Dawn Treader is being filmed.
