The Surfrider Foundation is a grassroots, non-profit, environmental organization that works to protect our oceans, waves, and beaches. Founded in 1984, Surfrider Foundation's most important coastal environmental work is carried out by Surfrider Foundation's 60 chapters located along the East, West, Gulf, Puerto Rican, and Hawaiian coasts. Surfrider Foundation now has over 40,000 members in the USA; in addition, International Surfrider Foundation chapters and affiliates have been established in the 5 foreign countries of Japan, Brazil, Australia, France and Spain.
Since its inception in 1984 in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation has proven to be an effective grassroots environmental organization. The Foundation has over 40,000 members (in the U.S.), is represented by 60 national chapters dispersed along the East, West, Gulf, Puerto Rican and Hawaiian coasts, and has branches in 5 foreign countries.
What makes Surfrider Foundation unique is its membership made up of surfers, swimmers, divers, bodyboarders, kayakers and beach enthusiasts from all walks of life. Surfrider Foundation members have proven to be powerful spokespeople and caretakers of the ocean environment which they treasure.
