BECA is a non-profit organization run by residents of La Mision in order to raise scholarship money for local children. In Mexico, children attend school free of charge until they reach the sixth grade. At that point, families must pay to keep their children in school, which is a financial burden that most cannot afford. BECA was created to keep children in school that have good grades and the desire to excel in their education and become a future leader in their community.
BECA raises scholarship money by hosting a variety of events throughout the year. In March a chili and flan cook-off is held that brings a bit of friendly competition to the community, as well as an appreciation for the dishes that are served up. Cinco de Mayo is a festive party with food and drinks on the beach. The main fundraiser is the Fandango, which is held on Labor Day weekend. The Fandango is a dinner dance with a raffle, a silent auction and a live auction featuring art from local artists. The Fandango takes place in the La Mision river valley and is always a beautiful setting for the event.
