The charming setting of Vinos Fuentes will delight your senses. Situated on slightly more than 70 hectares of premium land along both sides of the riverbed in Baja California's romantic Valle de Guadalupe, Vinos Fuentes provides a gorgeous retreat-style atmosphere and a wonderful family friendly welcome for tourists and wine lovers.
As you approach the winery, you will make your way past the vines, many of which are over 25 years old! Ten different types of wine and a variety of delicious table grapes are now produced on the Fuentes property, which was purchased by patriarch Hector Fuentes in 1958 and originally dedicated to raising cattle and fruit. Wines offered include Cabernet Sauvignon, French Colombard, Grenache, Merlot, Muscat, Nebbiolo, Petite Sirah, Port, Tempranillo, and a handful of Cabernet blends.
Hector, a talented and hardworking graduate of Texas A&M's degree programs in Animal Husbandry and Soil Sciences, experimented over many years with best agricultural practice. When Hector retired and handed operation of the family farm over to his son Miguel, all of his sons supported Miguel's dream of turning the property into a world class vineyard and artisan winery. Wine production officially began in the year 2000.
Miguel, who holds a degree from the University of California Davis in International Agricultural Development, is the kindest and most outgoing host any guest could hope for. Passionate about wine, he oversees every aspect of the Vinos Fuentes winemaking process and also gives all of the winery's guided tours himself (by appointment). Visitors delight in his humorous, informative, helpful style.
Tours of Vinos Fuentes begin in the vineyard, then move on toward the machinery. Guests are given an excellent description of and insight into the de-stemming process, pressing, transferring the wine into tanks and also fermentation. Finally guests end up in the Vinos Fuentes tasting room, where they sample a variety of wines.
In addition to its charming tasting room and production facility, the 8250 square foot Vinos Fuentes building also boasts its own boutique store and a soon-to-be-completed restaurant which will feature traditional Mexican recipes, family-style portions and top quality steaks. Barbecues, special events and weddings will all take place here in an atmosphere of warmth, elegance and beauty.
Full of treasures, the on-site Vinos Fuentes boutique store is a "must-shop!" for any visitor. In addition to wine, visitors may purchase tasty non-alcoholic beverages, local gourmet foods, olive oil and olives, posters and various wine accessories.
Parents with younger children will especially love this winery, which prides itself on being a family oriented operation offering something of value to meet the needs of all guests from the youngest child to the oldest grandparent. There is even a supervised playground on the property so that visiting children can play and explore happily and safely while their parents enjoy wine tasting nearby.
Tasting fees are refundable toward the purchase of wine. Vinos Fuentes prices are extremely reasonable and these wines are considered to be an "excellent value" by local wine expert Steve Dryden.
