Baja Malibu Barrel - Baja Surf Guide

Contrary to the name, Baja Malibu is not a righthand pointbreak. However, it is one of the best beachbreaks in northern Baja and just a short trip across the border. The exit for Baja Malibu is clearly marked from the toll road, just a few kilometers south of the first toll booth heading away from Tijuana. Baja Malibu offers up thick, steep barreling waves for experienced surfers only. When it is big the paddle out is punishing, so be prepared to pay your dues. The payoff is spitting barrels that reel off on all swell directions. Bring a board with some extra length if the swell is overhead…you are going to need it. Baja Malibu works best on a medium to low tide. Use caution during the winter months, as north swells can push sewage from the treatment plant a few kilometers north of here, giving the water a grayish tint and a not so pleasant smell.
